British dog breeds are very popular. One of the most famous is the beagle. Its representatives are born hunters. Evidence of this is their short legs, allowing them to make their way into the mink. These dogs are quick, agile and courageous. Their sense of smell is considered the best, because they often become official, helping police, customs officers and the military. Many note the injustice of animals, which is becoming an insurmountable obstacle to education. However, real dog lovers cannot resist the sensitive mind of the beagles and their devotion.
History of breed origin
Researchers do not adhere to a single version of the origin of the Beagle breed, converging only in the fact that it originates from BC. Ancient Greek historians mentioned the existence of beagle dogs with excellent scents. The peculiarity of the animals were short paws, which did not prevent them from developing high speed in the pursuit of game.
The ancient Romans in many ways became the successors of the Greeks, including the breeding of certain animal breeds, among which were the ancestors of the modern beagle. It is believed that it was the Roman inhabitants who brought the first representatives of this breed to the territory of England. However, do not forget that the British had their own breeds of hounds. As a result, in the mid-18th century, two branches of thoroughbred hunting dogs formed in England. The southern hounds belonged to the first, the northern beagles to the second.
Researchers put forward another assumption about the genesis of the breed, according to which there was an artificial breeding of these representatives in the mid-19th century. The foundation was a large number of dogs from all over Britain. The breed was developed by Parson Hanewood. The breeder presented the result of his experiment at a specialized animal exhibition in Essex.
Subsequently, the breed gained popularity in the UK and in America. By the first decade of the 20th century, more than a dozen beagle clubs, as well as breeding nurseries, were established in both countries. Despite this, the adoption of breed standards occurred only in 1957. The external characteristics of the dogs remained almost unchanged. The breed specialization has undergone adjustments. If earlier the beagles were primarily hunting dogs, now they become faithful companions of a person in the military, customs and police service.
An interesting fact is that the development of the breed did not end there. In the 80s of the 20th century, breeders crossed the beagle and the pug. The result was a new breed with pronounced individual characteristics, called pagl. However, she did not receive official recognition, although the representatives of the breed have very unusual and distinctive features.
