How to clean pearls at home

Pearl jewelry completes the look, making it airy and light. The exquisite creation of the deep sea is firmly entrenched in the hearts of its owners. However, like any other product, pearls require careful handling and careful care. Consider the important aspects in order and give effective ways to clean this kind of jewelry.

Why clean the pearls

• frequent exposure to direct sunlight;
• prolonged contact with water (salty and fresh sources, running water, etc.);
• hit on the pearls of perfume, aerosols, essential oils, decorative cosmetics;
• excess subcutaneous fat on the surface of the product, which are formed during wear.

How to clean pearls at home

Since pearl jewelry is moody, it requires careful handling and gentle cleaning. Consider the popular “soft” products that can cope with any kind of pollution.

Cleaning methods

• olive oil;
• starch (potato, corn);
• shampoo or soap for children;
• ground salt (food).

Necessary materials

• cosmetic sponges for applying and removing cleaning composition;
• soft flannel / cotton fabric (mainly moisture-absorbing);
• velveteen or suede bags for storing products.

Olive oil
Olive oil is used to add shine and saturation to pearl jewelry. In addition, the composition effectively removes even the most complex contaminants.

Apply moderate amount of oil to cosmetic sponge, wrap the last bead, wipe it thoroughly. Move along the entire length of the item, carefully crafting each pearl.

After the procedure, remove the excess oily base with a paper or cotton towel. Gently polish the product with a flannel patch, place the jewelry in the bag for safety.

Important!
It is strongly not recommended to use other types of natural oils (vegetable, sea-buckthorn, corn, etc.) for cleaning pearl jewelry. The structure of these products is extremely fatty, they clog small pores on beads and attract dust.

Starch (corn, potato)
The product is used to clean jewelry from delicate materials, pearls are no exception.

Cut a square patch of velvet fabric, pour starch into it. Unfasten the clasp on the pearls and wrap the product in a flap. Starting with the last bead, wipe the product with your fingers, gradually moving along the entire length.

Perform the procedure until the dark coating or yellowness disappears. At the end of the manipulation, wipe the jewelry with a soft flannel cloth to remove any remaining material, put the pearls in a bag.

Shampoo or soap for children
Since pearls are delicate jewelry, care should be appropriate.For cleaning, you will need a mild liquid soap, baby shower gel or shampoo.

Prepare a mild solution by mixing warm purified water with a small amount of the selected product. Dip a cosmetic sponge into the product, wring it out, wipe the beads one by one.

In cases if you decide to clean the earrings, brooch, ring or pendant, send the jewelry to a soap composition for 5-10 minutes. After the expiration date, remove the pearl product, dry it with a soft cloth, and send it to the casket or bag for safety.

Edible salt
A truly versatile product used to clean jewelry from various materials. Pearls are no exception.

Prepare a shred of cotton or linen cloth, pour crushed salt on it. Lay the jewelry on the surface so that the beads are next to the salt.

Wrap the product in a cloth, pour warm (30-35 degrees) filtered water into a container, put a homemade bag with pearls in it. Wait about half an hour until the salt crystals dissolve completely.

After the expiration of the period, dry the jewelry, polish the pearls with a soft lint-free cloth, place it in a velvet bag for safety.

Important!
It is forbidden to wash pearls under running water, to act on it with saline if the product is strung on a sewing thread. Otherwise, the fabric base may rupture under the pressure of water or salt.

Practical recommendations

1. Pay special attention to storing pearl jewelry. Without fail, wrap them in a velor or suede flap, do not allow contact with other jewelry.
2. Do not wear pearls under a coarse wool sweater, hard coat, or denim jacket. The listed wardrobe items leave microcracks on the beads.
3. After using the product, wipe the pearls with a damp cloth to remove any remaining subcutaneous fat and dead epidermal particles.
4. Wear the jewelry only after the makeup is completely completed to prevent cosmetics and perfumes from getting in.
