One eye sees worse than the other: what to do?

A pathology in which one eye sees worse than the other is called amblyopia. A violation develops due to dysfunction of the visual analyzer, i.e. disturbances in the relationship of the brain with the organs of vision.

One eye sees worse than the other

Causes

Amblyopia is a pathology that can be eliminated. However, first of all, it is necessary to find out the reasons why it arose. These may include:

  1. Temporal arteritis. It is accompanied by compression of the optic nerve by an artery, as a result of which the eye perceives visual information worse. This violation is dangerous because it can lead to complete loss of vision.
  2. Carotid stenosis (typical for elderly patients). The pathology is based on circulatory disorders in the organ of vision.
  3. Optical neuropathy (the root cause may be high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, vascular atherosclerosis). With optical neuropathy, pain does not occur. Precursors of the disease, manifested by a temporary violation of visual function, may be observed.
  4. Retrobulbar neuritis. The inflammatory process, which is characterized by rapid development. It is accompanied by severe pain and flickering in the eyes. It does not lead to a complete loss of vision.

Provocative factors

Factors that increase the risk of amblyopia include:

  • strabismus;
  • heredity;
  • circulatory disturbance;
  • nerve compression;
  • injury to the organ of vision;
  • traumatic brain injury;
  • high blood pressure;
  • born pathologies of the organs of vision;
  • eye diseases of an infectious nature.

Types of Amblyopia

  1. Refractive. It occurs against the background of strabismus, myopia. It is a consequence of the systematic formation of fuzzy images on the retina. It can develop as a result of the refusal to wear corrective glasses.
  2. Dysbinocular. Often develops against the background of strabismus.
  3. Obscuration. The reason is genetic disorders. This form can be inherited.
  4. Anisometropic. Pathology develops gradually if 1 eye sees worse than the other by several diopters.

Amblyopia Treatment

Contact a specialist if you experience the first symptoms. The treatment of amblyopia is primarily aimed at eliminating the cause of the disturbance, enhancing the visual function of the weak eye and achieving a good level of vision in both eyes.

A specialist can prescribe wearing glasses or corrective contact lenses. Also, treatment can be performed surgically. The operation is relevant in cases of strabismus or cataracts.

To restore the visual functions of the weak eye, special visual exercises are used. They show the greatest effectiveness when used at an early age. Also, one eye with good vision is sometimes closed to activate the possibilities of the weaker. To do this, use bandages and every day for several hours or all day they block a healthy eye. Use this method for several weeks, months.

There are special tools that can be used in such cases. For example, a doctor may prescribe wearing opaque contact lenses or instilling atropine in a healthy eye - drops that will provoke blurry images in it.

Other reasons why one eye sees worse than the other

Visual impairment from one eye may occur due to:

  1. Conjunctivitis. This is one of the most common infections that occurs in both children and adults. The inflammatory process usually affects one eye, but in the absence of hygiene and proper care can spread to the second. Characteristic signs are swelling, lacrimation, eye pain, and visual impairment. In the process of treatment, special drops are used, often from the category of antibacterial drugs. Self-medication is prohibited, as it can lead to serious complications.
  2. Herpes simplex infection. The lesion is observed on the cornea of the eye. Cases of the disease are more often recorded in the autumn-winter period. The onset of the disease is due to a decrease in immunity and a lack of vitamins. Treatment is aimed at suppressing the activity of the virus.
  3. Cataracts The cause of the disease is retinal detachment. The inflammatory process leads to visual impairment and pain. The restoration of impaired function in this case is possible only by conducting a surgical operation, during which the affected lens is replaced with a new one.
  4. Barley The characteristic signs of its formation is compaction, hyperemia. A small abscess begins to form, which bursts after 5-7 days. It is advisable to consult a doctor at the first symptoms, since treatment started at an early stage can stop the development of inflammation.
  5. Glaucoma The development of glaucoma can be indicated by sharp pain in the eye, hyperemia of the eye, the occurrence of "veil". Attacks of nausea and vomiting may occur. The occurrence of such symptoms should be an occasion to consult a doctor.

The reason that vision decreases in one eye may lie in cervical osteochondrosis. Pathology leads to compression of the aorta, passing along the spinal column and providing the optic nerve with full blood circulation.

To avoid deterioration, experts advise to adhere to the following recommendations:

  • Perform gymnastics for the eyes;
  • take a contrast shower (wash first with hot, then cold water);
  • use artificial tear preparations to moisturize the eye mucosa;
  • make compresses with parsley juice or black tea;
  • use hypoallergenic and natural cosmetics;
  • Perform a light eye massage (patting, stroking, which improves blood circulation).
